World War One tank communication card
Here is a card from WW1 that provided communication between (British) tanks and infantry, or tanks and tanks. The early tanks did not have radios or any means of easy communication. Communication was achieved by the tank commander holding up coloured discs in a particular order to communicate a particular meaning. All soldiers, and in particular officers would be expected to know the meanings of all the signals.
