Lower Hutt Historical Society
A heritage rich in military commitment
A talk by Lower Hutt resident Don McIver, a former Chief of General
Staff, New Zealand Army (in the rank of Major General) and currently Executive
Trustee, Army Memorial Museum.
Don McIver writes: ‘The development of New Zealand’s national identity has
been inextricably bound to its military history. There has barely been a period
since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (and even pre-European settlement)
when we have not had armed forces engaged in or preparing for conflict or
peace-keeping, either at home or abroad. It is a heritage rich in military
commitment and sacrifice. I will discuss this proposition in more detail.’
