World War One pay book and ration book
Every soldier was issued with a pay book that contained basic enlistment details and pay deductions. This book was supposed to be kept on them at all times - usually in a top blouse pocket. When on leave the soldier was provided with a ration book similar to those supplied to civilians that allowed the soldier to purchase food at eating establishments etc. .
